Northampton a standout in female leadership, yet challenges remain in ‘unique city’
Northampton is in many ways a stand-out in female leadership: more than half of the city's department heads, the mayor, the majority of the City Council and the city's representatives in both the state House and state Senate are women. And yet, this makes Northampton an outlier.

Jean Sinzdak, the associate director of the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University, said 35% of the State Senate and Assembly seats in New Jersey are held by women, which means Jersey ranks 21st in the nation.
