Stuart M. Lederman’s practice encompasses an unusually broad range in Riker Danzig’s litigation and governmental affairs departments. He represents clients in construction, real estate, eminent domain, and civil litigation matters. He also has a significant professional liability practice, defending architects and engineers and advising lawyers on ethics matters.
Lederman represents owners, architects and engineers in construction disputes; owners and bidders in bid disputes and debarment issues; and clients that are dealing with government agencies. He also represents government agencies involved in disputes with various parties and advises the agencies in day-to-day operations.
In one of his more well-known cases, Lederman represented the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in matters involving allegations of racial profiling by state troopers. In another, T & E Co. v. Safety Light Industries Inc., Lederman was part of a legal team that established the concept in New Jersey of strict liability for an environmental tort.
When parties come to Stuart for legal help, they receive the benefit of his many years of legal experience and they also get a common-sense approach to problem-solving. “I don’t immediately say, ‘Let’s bring a lawsuit,'” he says. “I try to have them look at the issue from a business perspective and evaluate how best to proceed.” His clients have included the Perini Corp., Edwards and Kelcey Inc., Bed Bath and Beyond, the State Casino Reinvestment Development Authority, and EI Associates Inc.
Best Lawyers in America®, a peer review of U.S. lawyers, has included Lederman on its Best Lawyers list in the fields of Commercial Litigation, Eminent Domain, Construction Litigation and Real Estate Litigation since 2007. Best Lawyers named Stuart the 2015 Eminent Domain and Condemnation Law “Lawyer of the Year” for the Newark region; this is an honor given annually to a single attorney in a particular practice area in each region. Thomson Reuters has included him on New Jersey’s “Super Lawyers” list for General Litigation since 2006.
Lederman recently spoke on “Ethical Cliffhangers for Trial Attorneys” for NJICLE, “Lost Profits Disputes: Foundation for Reasonable Economic Damages” at the New Jersey Law Journal’s In-House Counsel CLE Seminar and “Ethical and Regulatory Considerations for Licensed Engineers in New Jersey” for the American Water Works Association: New Jersey Section.
