Voter Choice New Jersey reviews ballots and the Ranked-Choice Voting election process with event attendees.

Students and Patrons Learn About Ranked-Choice Voting with VCNJ

Eagleton welcomed Voter Choice New Jersey (VCNJ) to Wood Lawn to teach our audience about Ranked-Choice Voting (RCV), how it works, and what it means for democracy. To immerse patrons and students in the experience, VCNJ team members hosted an interactive simulation called “Rank the Cookies.” Participants were given 5 cookies, and they had to rank their favorites in order. Ballots were counted and collected, which included some “wasted” votes–meaning the voter only voted for 1 option instead of ranking their favorites in order. According to VCNJ, “the RCV process builds a majority by eliminating the candidate with the lowest number of votes and transferring votes cast for the eliminated candidate to the voters’ next preference, repeating the process until one candidate has a majority of the votes.” By the end, the audience learned that RCV may remove some of the limits on choice from the voting process by instead allowing voters to weigh in on their preferences throughout the entire election process.
