Exercising Political Courage
A Conversation with Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway and Eagleton Institute of Politics Director John J. Farmer, Jr.
“When you see something that is not right, not just, not fair, you have a moral obligation to say something. To do something.” These words were shared and lived by the Honorable John Lewis. Drawing from this inspiration and their own lived experiences, New Jersey Lieutenant Governor and former State Assembly Speaker Sheila Y. Oliver and John J. Farmer, Jr., director of Rutgers’ Eagleton Institute of Politics and former New Jersey Attorney General, will discuss what it means and what it takes to exercise political courage. The conversation will examine political decisions and actions that can preserve or strengthen democratic institutions at the state and local level—and the personal sacrifice or fortitude they demand. Topics will include police reform and the attempted reorganization of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. The exchange will be followed by an open Q&A session with League participants.
This program is accessible to New Jersey League of Municipalities members participating in the conference.
Rutgers students, faculty, and staff may participate by pre-registering with their Rutgers email by November 12th.
