Shields is a historian and program manager with the Center on the American Governor, conducting research on governors in New Jersey and throughout the United States. He earned his B.A. in American studies at Yale University and a J.D. cum laude from the New York University School of Law. He also received a Ph. D. in history from Rutgers University in 2015. He is admitted to the New York Bar and practiced in New York City as an associate in the real estate and litigation departments at Dechert LLP and as a media law clerk at NBC Universal.
In addition to his work on governors, Shields focuses on 20th century U.S. legal and cultural history and is particularly interested in the cultural importance of famous trials. While at Rutgers, Shields served as a researcher at the Thomas A. Edison Papers and as an instructor of expository writing in the Rutgers Writing Program. He was an Eagleton Fellow in 2012-2013, placed at the State Historic Preservation Office in Trenton.
