About Eagleton

Recognizing that the fifty states are the laboratories of American democracy, the Eagleton Institute of Politics has long focused attention on state legislative research and service to ensure that both scholars and citizens understand the role and functioning of state government.

Eagleton's work has encompassed not only scholarship and applied research, but active involvement through public service programs to improve state legislatures as institutions. More recently, the Rutgers Program on the Governor was established at Eagleton in 2006 as the nation's only academic resource focusing on chief executives in the states. The program, looking at governors both nationally and in New Jersey, complements Eagleton's long-standing national prominence in work on state legislatures. The Institute approaches the subjects of governors and state legislatures as it does other topics — from a non-partisan perspective, blending scholarly study with understanding gained from the world of practitioners.
